Abstract
In the monograph that is the subject of this review, Fabio Salmeri discusses the Turin-based composer Gaetano Pugnani (1731–98) and his Violin Concerto in D major. The only known copy of this composition, in the hand of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, is currently kept at the Scientific Library of the PAAS and the PAS in Kraków. Salmeri presents Pugnani as a major figure in the Italian violin school and emphasises his contributions to the development of violin virtuosity. Analysis of his D major Concerto reveals both features of the Classical concerto and an innovative language that foreshadows the next epoch in music history.
