Exhibitions by the Fine Arts Association in Gdańsk in the Years 1835–1873. Organisation, Contents, Functions and Role

Abstract
The aim of the article is to determine the role which the exhibitions organised by the Fine Arts Association in Gdańsk (Kunstverein zu Danzig) between 1835 and 1873 played in the local artistic community and to lay the foundations for further research in this area. On the basis of, among others, the Association’s account books, statutes and exhibition catalogues, it was possible to reconstruct the manner in which these exhibitions were organised, as well as to determine their specific nature and their function. Also, taking into account the Association’s membership of the Exhibition Union East of the Elbe (Ausstellungsverband östlich der Elbe), the issue of the travelling nature of exhibitions within the Union framework was examined. The content of the exhibitions was presented, listing the artists showing their works therein. The exhibitions were analysed in terms of their role in the contemporary trade in artworks. Particular attention is paid to the presence of works of art by artists associated with Gdańsk at the Kunstverein’s exhibitions.

Marcin Tulibacki holds Masters degrees in the fields of Art Sciences (Institute of Art History, University of Gdańsk, 2022) and History (Institute of History, University of Gdańsk, 2023). He is currently a PhD Candidate at the Doctoral School at the Faculty of History, University of Gdańsk, in the discipline of Art Sciences. His research interests focus on the painting, graphic arts, design and artistic life of the 18th to 20th centuries. He is a member of the Warsaw Department of the Association of Art Historians and “Dom Uphagena” Association in Gdańsk.
