Abstract

The author takes a look at motifs from reflections about art developed by the artist-thinker Jacek Sempoliński, associated with the category of suffering. In doing so, he goes on the assumption that this particular category occupies a prominent place within the constellation of concepts of key significance for this vision of art and the creative act. It describes the existential condition of a man, a Christian, a homosexual, and an artist torn between the internalised social and religious non-acceptance of his sexual identity, on the one hand, and the fundamental need for love and erotic fulfilment, on the other. In Sempoliński’s reflections suffering appears also on a universal and abstract level as a condition for creativity in general or, at the very least, for rising above the average. It remains an element of a sui generis cosmology developed by this painter.

Paweł Drabarczyk vel Grabarczyk – adiunkt w Instytucie Kulturoznawstwa Uniwersytetu Wrocławskiego. Autor książki Gorączka i popiół. Imaginaria nowej sztuki (2023). Bada funkcjonowanie w polu sztuki kategorii takich jak wzniosłość, niewyobrażalne, numinosum, sacrum czy niesamowite. Do swych zainteresowań badawczych zalicza również teorię wyobraźni, alternatywne historie sztuki, a także widmowe instytucje powoływane do życia przez artystki i artystów. Doktorat obroniony w Instytucie Sztuki PAN poświęcił kategorii wzniosłości w polskiej sztuce współczesnej. Publikował między innymi w „Kontekstach”, „Tekstach Drugich”, „Artifex Novus”, „Szumie” i „Frazie”.
