Abstract

Traces of the presence of Odilo Globocnik – SS commander and one of the chief architects of Operation Reinhard, a plan for the mass extermination of Jews in the General Government – inscribed within the urban space of Lublin, unfold as “relics of darkness”, material remnants that resonate within sites marked by the meanings of the Holocaust and complex spatial-temporal relations. These objects, acting as contact points between physical space and the symbolic texture of memory, are continually overwritten by the city’s history. Another arena in which these layered structures emerge – and where “the blink of an eye” serves as a frame for reflecting on the past, the present, and the future – is Tomasz Pietrasiewicz’s The Grodzka Gate – NN Theatre Centre.

Łukasz Stypuła – a historian with a specialization in Jewish studies and a Ph.D. in Religious Studies; completed his studies at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków. He is currently affiliated with the Laboratory of the Anthropology of Words at the “Grodzka Gate – NN Theatre” Centre in Lublin. He has been awarded fellowships by the Institutum Judaicum at the University of Tübingen, the European Institute for Jewish Studies in Sweden in Stockholm, the National Science Centre, and the Lanckoroński Foundation. His research interests include the Jewish city of Lublin, Hebrew poetry of the Al-Andalus period, Jewish philosophical thought in the Middle Ages, and Christian Kabbalah. His research has been conducted in various countries, including Sweden, Germany, Italy, Israel, and Poland.
