The Exhibition Wielkopolska plastyka gotycka (1936) Against the Backdrop of Temporary Exhibitions of Medieval Art in the Interwar Period

Abstract
Organised in 1936 at the Greater Poland Museum, the exhibition Wielkopolska plastyka gotycka (Gothic art in Greater Poland) was one of the most important cultural events of interwar Poznań, never since repeated on a similar scale. The archival materials that have been found, including press clippings, photographs and documentation, make it possible to analyse both the exhibition itself and its social reception. In addition, these sources help to reconstruct the organisational proces and spatial layout of the exhibition. They provide a starting point for reflection on the new perspectives it brought to research on Gothic art in Greater Poland, and for capturing its distinctive features in comparison with other presentations of medieval art in the interwar period. The meta-history of art perspective adopted in the article, focusing on the national paradigm, allows the exhibition to be placed in a broader, ideologically charged and nationalistic discourse within the history of art in the 20th century.
