The Balance of Benefits and Detriments, or About the Polish Edition of “Film Art: An Introduction”
Abstract
A book review of the world famous Film Art: An Introduction (first ed. 1979) by David Bordwell and Kristin Thompson, now translated into Polish (2010). In the introduction Kłys presents the theoretical profile of the book. He notes that Bordwell and Thompson’s theory of film is a neoformalist theory (“neo”, because the first formalism is the Russian one) and a cognitive theory. Kłys also notes that the numerous mistakes made by the translator (especially regarding the use of the word “narrative” in various contexts) might make it more difficult for readers to appreciate the neoformalist distinctions that are so important for Bordwell and Thompson.
