Deconstruction of “The Draughtsman’s Contract”: Framing the Frame
Abstract
Aesthetics is a discourse on framework - on what is a work of art and what its framework, and what is external of the two. The notion of frame is of key importance in Strojna’s text. Citing Kant’s and Derrida’s theories she makes an analysis of the category of frame in the context of Peter Greenaway’s The Draughtsman’s Contract. Frame not only becomes the frame of a picture or an aesthetic category but also a philosophical category determining the status of an artwork, the way it exists and its reception by the spectator.
