The Anthropologist Is Looking at Photos
Abstract
The following is a review of Sławomir Sikora’s book Photography - between Document and Symbol. The book does not deal with photography as a whole, it only tries to explore a narrow zone of the border where photos are losing literal and take on metaphorical dimension. Among crucial notions used in his analysis are: memory, myth, metaphor, symbol, aporia and trauma. Sikora makes use of various linguistic (W. Benjamin, R. Barthes, J. Berger, P. Auster), cinematic (M. Antonioni’s blow up, and Smoke by P. Auster and W. Wang) and photographic (Another Way of Telling by J. Berger and J. Mohr, and Wisconsin Death Trip by M. Lesy) documents. Besides other matters the book shows the multilevel role photography plays in culture. Sulima underscores the importance of the book in anthropological reflection on photography.
