The Picture of Time in Solitude: “The Noose” by Wojciech Jerzy Has
Abstract
Citing theories of Erwin Panofsky and Maurice Merlau-Ponty, Frąc recalls the problem of the artistic possibility of transcendence of cinema, its capacity to take control of the materiality of the represented world. Frąc says that the visuality of The Noose by Has brings the film closer to the impassable line beyond which the cinematic medium would have full optical power over reality and material identity of the objects. Frąc tries to translate the theories into the fundamental sense of The Noose, that is a traumatic experiencing of time in an absolute feeling of loneliness.
