“By Portraying Others I Am Looking for a Particle of Myself”: Mikołaj Jazdon Talks to Documentary Director Grażyna Banaszkiewicz
Abstract
Banaszkiewicz has made a couple of films on artists, among others on poet Halina Poświatowska, Catholic priest and poet Jan Twardowski, poet Stanisław Grochowiak or composer Krzesimir Dębski. She says that Kieślowski influenced her decision to become a director, and had an influence on her conception of film and art, therefore he is an important artist to her. The film about Kieślowski was a special challenge, and its shooting was a very difficult process, the more so that it told about problems Kieślowski himself found difficult, about how painful it was to reach the mature conception of the cinema. It is also a conversation about the significance of blind chance in documentary film making, and how reality goes beyond initial guidelines and conceptions.
