The Value of Silence

Abstract
Piłat discusses the issue of silence in films in the metaphorical sense of giving up any interpretation of reality and suspension of one own’s right to make choices and evaluations. Farewells by Wojciech Has and Jerzy Kawalerowicz’s The Train serve as a pretext to develop the theme. The action of the films takes place shortly after World War II when the heroes’ memory is frequently haunted by the times of an annihilation of all values. According to Piłat, the films show an easy-to-overcome moment, second only to the disaster, when the inevitable lack of sense should be bravely retained as pure lack of it. All premature attempts to interpret the negative situation is a kind of falsity, and in consequence leads to evil.
