Transcultural Cinema (part I)
Abstract
The text is a translation of the last chapter of David MacDougall’s book Transcultural Cinema. He is surely one of the most interesting ethnographic filmmakers and also writes critical anthropological texts. MacDougall is a strong advocate of the independence of film (visual) statements from “written anthropology”. The following text is an attempt to analyse in detail the importance of visuality for anthropology and „benefits” it may draw from visuality. It is also a detailed analysis of the difference between written and cinematic forms of communication.
- The text is a translation of the chapter from the book Transcultural Cinema by David MacDougall, Princeton University Press, Princeton 1998. © 1998 by Princeton University Press.
