Dual Form of “The Codes” by Wojciech Jerzy Has: The Truth to Decipher
Abstract
Guérin-Castell makes a detailed formal analysis of Has’s film about an arduous search for the truth of the death of a young boy during the German occupation. The investigation is conducted by his father who lived outside Poland during and after the war. The story takes place at several levels: realistic (family meetings, especially with his older son), retrospective (recollections, documentary pictures) and visionary (scenes which are a figment of the main hero’s imagination). They overlap and interact. Such a formula helps decipher the truth (uncertain and approximate but very painful) about the death of the boy.
