“Glass Lips” by Lech Majewski
Abstract
Lech Majewski’s Glass Lips (2006) are a result of a formal experiment. The film presents individual images from Majewski’s installation The Blood of the Poet, ordered within a story. The experiment sanctions the adopted „philosophy of narration”: reality understood as a convolution of elements and images that permeate each other in a simultaneous movement. In the film there is also present one of the most important themes in the work of the director - sacrifice. The author, by referring to particular scenes, investigates the theme of sacrifice in the biblical context, in myth (the cult of Mitra), art (Rogier van der Weyden, Giorgio de Chirico, Paul Delvaux) and in the li- terary context (Rafał Wojaczek). Honek also refers to Majewski’s literary work and its transposition into his films. The article is concluded with an analysis of a theme key to Majewski’s entire work as an artist - namely purification. The final section, that refers to Lucas Cranach the Elder’s the Fountain of Youth, gives one further opportunity to analyse this motif in the Glass Lips.
