Major Themes in the Cinema of Takashi Miike
Abstract
It is widely thought that the work of Takashi Miike does not go beyond bold genre cinema. But Mes argues, however, that to Miike, genre is not a point of departure but a point of destination. According to Mes, Miike crosses the boundaries of genre cinema, re-formulating its conventions or negating them. Mes suggests that Miike includes into his films the same motifs and themes – of being rootless, outcast, or seeking happiness in a family or a group, or of nostalgia for the lost childhood – to show a permanent process characters have to undergo; the process that always leads to an outbreak of violence.
