The Journey of a Hero
Abstract
Jan Troell’s film Hamsun is analyzed in this text. Roskowska focuses first of all on the controversial attitude of Knut Hamsun in WW2 when he supported the German fascist ideology. Roskowska presents the reasons that led Hamsun to take such a stance, but does not offer explicit answers. She looks for analogies between the writing of the Norwegian and tenets of the Fascist ideology. Roskowska writes about the novelist, his history, character traits, his writing technique, family ties, the phenomenon and circumstances of the making of his last novel On Overgrown Paths. She also writes about an unusual meeting of Hamsun and Adolf Hitler and the novelist’s trial in the twilight of his life.
