Film Pictures of Joan of Arc: An Illustration of the Development of World Cinematography
Abstract
Płażewski discusses ways of portraying Joan of Arc in 18 films made in the 20th century. Individual films are analysed against the wider context of the successive phases of the development of cinematography. Płażewski describes styles of actor’s play, takes note of mutual relations and references of individual screen versions. He stresses that film directors, including Ucicky, Delannoy, Dreyer, Besson and others, did not put the same emphasis on important facts from Joan of Arc’s life. Her military victories featured in films by Caserini and DeMille who heralded her political functions; e.g. uniting France and fighting the English. Bresson and Rossellini, the apologists of Joan of Arc’s martyrdom, stressed her unshakeable faith, belief in mission and naturalness in communing with the Absolute.
