Abstract

Świętochowska reflects on the phenomenon of the popularity of James Cameron’s Titanic, the most expensive Hollywood production ever. She makes an in-depth analysis of the film on the basis of a pattern from Vladimir Propp’s Morphology of the Folktale, and proves that it very accurately executes the composition guidelines of magical fairy tales. Perhaps, that is the secret of Titanic’s popularity. The public draws pleasure not from following the plot but from predicting, which is free from an element of surprise.
