Talks at the End of the Epoch
Abstract
Many films in which heroes’ conversations form a constructional pattern have been recently made. The fall of big ideologies, dehumanized culture and the frantic pace of life are the reasons why man is becoming increasingly alienated on the one hand, and the omnipresent process of globalization, and new surveillance technologies on the other hand. What is to be the source of sense of security in the modem world? Film directors of the 1990’s reply: spontaneous interhuman relations based on empathy with people and frank conversations. Conversation can also help keep close relations with others, and is a dependable method of getting to know oneself and the world. Radkiewicz analyses three films, including Nicole Holfocener’s Walking Talking (1996), Harry Sinclair’s Topless Women Talk About Their Lives (1997) and Troy Beyer’s Let’s Talk About Sex (1998). She discusses a new intimate way of filming and the used tools, such as video technique.
