Reality TV – An Attempt at Analysis
Abstract
Reality television is a new television genre but its many characteristic features can be identified in such programmes as quiz shows, talk-shows, soap operas and some documentaries. The expansion of reality shows follows the „new television order”, or changes occurring in the area of European media. Some post-modernist features are also characteristic of the genre. In connection with this, Mazierska writes about such issues as intercontextuality, the role of author and the concept of simulacrum. Reality shows are a global phenomenon but they reflect the specific national character. Also discussed are ethical questions and the presence of the genre’ on public TV.
