Abstract

The article discusses the history of two theatre companies active in Lublin from July to October 1944. The first was an association of actors established by theatre artists who had been part of the underground during the Nazi occupation; the company was headed by Józef Klejer and Irena Ładosiówna and performed in the house of the Miejski Theatre in Lublin on Narutowicz Street. The second company was the Theatre of the First Polish Army, founded by Polish armed forces in the Soviet Union in 1943 for soldiers fighting the war alongside the Red Army. The activities of both theatre companies in 1944 were entangled in the undergoing process of imposing the Communist regime in Poland. The article discusses the productions put on by Józef Klejer and Irena Ładosiówna at the time and the Lublin performances of the army theatre in the context of the on-going political struggle and the process of setting up the foundations for a new theatre system in the Communist Poland.
