Did Henryk Szaro Study under Vsevolod Meyerhold?

Abstract
The article discusses the film director Henryk Szaro’s theatre studies in Petrograd in 1919–1921. Based on newly discovered material from archives and periodicals, the author revisits the well-established belief, recurrent in reference literature, that Szaro studied under the theatre reformer Vsevolod Meyerhold. Based on documents, he identifies the places of residence and work of the two artists, verifies the names of teachers, and the plays in which the future director of Mocny Człowiek (A Strong Man) performed at the beginning of his artistic career. The articles presents the conclusions arising from this biographical investigation.

MATEUSZ MASŁOWSKI - graduate of theater studies at the Aleksander Zelwerowicz Theater Academy in Warsaw and the State Institute of Theater Arts in Moscow (GITIS). In 2018, he completed his postgraduate studies at the Department of Russian Theater at the State Institute of Theater Arts in Moscow. Since 2023, he has been a doctoral student at the Anthropos Doctoral School of the Polish Academy of Sciences. He is currently working on his doctoral thesis on the theatrical experiences of director Henryk Szaro and the connections between his films and Soviet theater of the early 1920s. Editor of Pamiętnik Teatralny. He deals with the history of 20th-century Russian theatre, Polish-Russian theatrical contacts, the work and theatrical thought of Nikolai Yevreinov, and Russian theatre in exile.
